The dynamic duo of Gnarls Barkley lit the stage of the 40 Watt Club on Tuesday night, alongside a lineup of excellent players, including Athens’ own Heather McIntosh (right in photo).
The cellist and University of Georgia music school grad has lent her talents to varied and esteemed Athens bands, from Elf Power, Japancakes and Circulatory System to her own project, The Instruments. McIntosh, who plays bass in Gnarls Barkley, became friends with the duo’s Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) when he, too, was attending UGA in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
She joined the band’s tour in conjunction with the release of its latest CD, “The Odd Couple.” The show Tuesday was as good as it gets in Athens - a sold out, sweaty, dancing crowd at a show featuring some of Athens’ own made huge.

It was just a rumor back from this post, yet, stunning 12.3-megapixel image quality, broad control and the world’s first digital SLR movie function combine to deliver unsurpassed creative freedom in a D-SLR.

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the introduction of its newest DX-format digital SLR, the D90. More than just a new camera, the D90 represents a new era of digital SLR fun and creativity.
The first thing that will amaze photographers about the D90 is its stunning image quality, which takes its inspiration from Nikon’s flagship DX-format digital SLR, the D300. The D90’s image sensor and 12.3 effective megapixels combine with Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED image processing to deliver outstanding images featuring fine details, smooth tones, rich colors and low noise across a wide ISO sensitivity range.
The D90 is the world’s first digital SLR camera with a movie shooting function that delivers genuinely cinematic results, enhanced by the creatively shallow depth of field made possible by the DX-format sensor. This is further refined by the optical quality and broad selection of NIKKOR lenses — the same lenses relied upon by professional photographers the world over. Thanks to the D90’s large image sensor, D-Movie images exhibit less noise than those of a typical camcorder, most notably in low-light situations.
The D90 also provides remarkable performance and operability, featuring Nikon’s exclusive Scene Recognition System that advances precision in auto focus, auto exposure, and auto white balance in diverse shooting situations. Live View mode allows shooting while confirming the subject on the large 3-in., approx. 920k-dot high-density color LCD and offers three contrast-detect AF modes to allow photographers to focus on any point in the frame, enabling a greater variety of composition. In addition to wide and normal area AF, the D90 offers face priority AF in Live View mode for even sharper pictures of people.
All of these powerful features and more are housed in a compact, comfortable-to-hold body, with intuitive controls. In other words, the D90 is a camera that will satisfy the requirements of passionate photographers who demand superior image quality and crave exciting new photographic possibilities.

Here’s an Idiot’s Guide (as in written by, not intended for) to using the photo galleries on the website.
Getting started
Before you can add photos to the gallery you need the appropriate permissions. Before you can be given those, you need to register on the blog. So, if you haven’t already done that then go and do it now!
What about the permission thing? Anyone who has already signed up should have been given permissions to create albums within the Malawi 2008 gallery. If you’ve only just recently signed up then I will get notification of that and I’ll assign appropriate permissions. If that hasn’t happened within a few days, get in touch.
OK, so you’re signed up and have the appropriate permissions. What next?
Creating an album
Log in and go to the Malawi 2008 photo album.

Once you are there you will notice a drop-down box at the top right.

Select ‘Add Album’ and you will then be presented with a form to fill in with the details of your new album.

The album name is important. This is the name of the directory on the server so it has to be simple - no spaces, no funny characters. Stick to something like ‘johnmalawi08′ or similar. The album title though is something a bit more meaningful - ‘John’s photos’, say - as this will be what people see.
The rest of the information is optional and can always be added later if you want.
When you’re happy, click on the ‘Create’ button and your album will be created on the server.
You will then have a screen of settings associated with your album.
You shouldn’t have to change anything on this page but be aware of it as you will need to visit it again later. You could use it to increase the maximum size of the images in your album but please be aware that increasing this from the default 800×800 max will limit the number of photos you can upload. The default settings will allow around 200 photos per user. (There is a 30M quota in place.)
Having created your album you will want to add photos to it, so read on to find out how to do that.

It’s been a hectic couple of weeks here. If you’ve been reading along you already know that. Fortunately I think it will calm down shortly.
After work I went directly to Ian’s Gallery last night. We had some custom prints that needed to be addressed, and I had questions for Ian. Nailing prices down, framing costs, etc. Glad to say we had the time to figure everything out and I’ve got a handle on what’s going on with my photos. Ah, an easy moment.
In total, 9 of my prints were sold. Half were custom requests. According to Ian that’s not a bad start for a first timer in a gallery. I’m thinking it was a good start too.
We set out to only offer 1 limited edition print. You might remember the Courthouse photo taken at night. That was the initial limited edition. 1 of 100 was sold Saturday (glad you like it Dan). 2 of 100 should be up in the gallery today.
Due to several requests we ended up selling 3 limited edition prints. The Courthouse, the Firehouse Plaza, and my favorite Tree. All three are 1 of 100. The Courthouse will remain an 8×10 print, the other two are 8×12’s. 8×12’s are the size I prefer due to the format I shoot in.
So, here’s the rundown on limited edition framed and signed prints that I’ll be selling (in case you’re interested).
- 8×12 Limited Edition Framed & Signed: 100 of each of these will be sold. $125 each.
- 12×18 Limited Edition Framed & Signed: 100 of each of these will be sold. $250 each.
- 20×30 Limited Edition Framed & Signed: 50 of each of these will be sold. $500 each.
I’ll continue doing 5×7’s as well. They’ll be signed and framed, but not a numbered series. Those run $50 each, and that works well. Folks really liked them.
In addition to framed stuff I’ll be selling just the prints as well. If you want a poster print to do with as you like, you can get one!
Frame it how you see fit….. Here’s the breakdown on those, just as an FYI.
- 5×7 Print - $20
- 8×12 Print - $50
- 12×18 Print - $100
- 16×24 Print - $150
- 20×30 Print - $225
Well, there’s all the information of how we’ve nailed it down. Prices can change down the road due to demand, inflation, change in commodity prices, or hyper-inflation.
I think all the issues listed there are highly probable, don’t you???
So, now I’m done announcing the “business” stuff. And now that it’s settled I’m feeling pretty good about it. Want to know some of the fun stuff now???
I placed an order to MPix.com the other day for the custom prints. I can’t print larger than 8.5×11 here as I’ve got a small portable printer (it totally rocks). Since I was ordering a few 8×12’s I decided to try out some additional sizes. I did a 12×18 and a 20×30 of my Tree print. All the prints came in yesterday (overnighted), and I’m beyond thrilled with MPix. So glad Scott Kelby mentioned them on his blog. I’ll be using them for everything now.
Ian and I opened the giant box from MPix and I tried to figure out why the box was so big. I forgot that I’d requested a 20×30. Thought the 12×18 was it, along with the other smaller ones. So it was a nice surprise to see the super large format shot. I had it printed on their Kodak Metallic Paper just for giggles. All I can say is WOW!
We both stared at the large print for a while. Ian asked what I intended to do with it. I really didn’t have a plan, I’d just wanted to see the result. Seeing the result he insisted we frame both the 12×18 and 20×30. He also told me I need more wall space, and a gallery eventually. That’s way down the road and not on my radar screen, but it was a nice compliment!
Ian also said one more interesting thing that I thought was a joke last week. Looking at the large format Tree he said, “This is why you can’t photograph any of the spots I’ve painted. You’ll outsell me.” Now, Ian has amazing paintings. Really they’re just too cool. I don’t think I’d outsell him. But looking at the large format print on the metallic paper…….guess I won’t get to shoot the same canyons he’s painted!
I wish I could share the final results of the prints, but I really can’t. You’ve got to see the print on the metallic paper. If you think the shots are neat on the web site you’ll be floored by the actual prints!
Oh, and I kept an 8×12 for myself on the metallic paper. It’s way to cool. Guess I’ll stick it up on a wall in the Airstream soon!
Differences Between Professional and Amateur Photographers: via Photopreneur.com. I just came across Photopreneur.com today for the first time. It looks like a good resource for photographers moving towards becoming professional. …
Digital photography by unknown
Have you ever taken a picture and wondered after you took the shot just what were you thinking? Has it looked as if you were nowhere near the subject of your shot? This is something that happens a whole lot, however, there is hope and you can still take beautiful photographs with some help. It is best for these methods if you have a camera that will allow you to change the lenses; however, there are also some cameras, which will allow for aftermarket lenses to be added which gives the same effect you are looking for.
First type of lens to consider is the normal lens. This is something that will generally have a range of 45mm to typically only 60mm. However, while you are trying to figure out exactly what you can see from this range, consider your normal eyesight range. This is the best way to describe a normal camera lens. Many SLR cameras include the normal lens standard, however many people are opting for more advanced lenses lately instead.
Next type of lens is wide-angle lenses. These typically range from the 5mm to the 35mm range. Different lenses fluctuate between the various ranges and it is ok if your lens does not cover the full 5mm to 35mm distance. When you are looking for digital photograph success with wide-angle shots, you must have a wide-angle lens or you simply cannot get the great shot you are looking for. One of the biggest problems is wide angle lenses tend to be very expensive depending upon your camera.
Moving along we have telephoto lenses. If you are looking for digital photography success with shots from great distances then a good telephoto lens is an absolute necessity that you cannot pass up. Typical telephoto lenses cover distances that range from 85mm to as much as 600mm easily. Consider that you can capture the perfect shot from thousands of feet away with the right telephoto lens and you can see why this is awesome.
As you can imagine having the right lens for your needs can make a huge difference in terms of what is effective and what is not for capturing the perfect digital photography shot. If you have any doubts about whether your camera can change lenses, look towards your owners guide to help answer any questions about how to remove the lens and attach a new lens so you too can find digital photography success no matter what the shot you are after.
